I was inspired to do this post after watching Sherlock (the one with Benedict Cumberbatch). I view friendships as essential to happiness. I don’t have many friends but the ones I do have, I value immensely. Ross is more or less the same and he himself has a bromance that is forever making me roll my eyes.
Now if you do not know what a bromance is, it’s a friendship between two men that is close enough that they could be brothers or as us ladies like to joke, in a relationship with each other.
- Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)
- Harry Potter & Ron Weasley (Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling)
- Frodo Baggins & Samwise Gamgee (Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkein)
- Bingley & Darcy (Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen)
- Merry & Pippin (Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkein)
- Legolas & Gimli (Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkein)
- Cable & Deadpool (Cable and Deadpool by Fabian Nicieza)
- Warren & Ridge (Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover)
- Pudge & The Colonol (Looking for Alaska by John Green)
- Richard & Ohr (That Perfect Someone by Johanna Lindsey)
Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson
To me, this friendship is the quintessential bromance. To begin with, Holmes had people that tolerated him. Until Watson became his roommate, Holmes had no friends. The fact that Watson legitimately became a friend with Holmes, constitutes as a bromance to me. Watson is so loyal to Holmes that he can forgive him for everything. Including faking his own death. Their bromance is so strong that Watson is prepared to ditch his wife and run into danger for Holmes.
Harry Potter & Ron Weasley
I instantly wanted to write: “this friendship is so special” and realized, that’s what makes it a bromance. It’s a friendship that is that extra bit special. Just between males. I love that Harry has the ability to use his name to gain status at Hogwarts but chooses to be friends with Ron. I love that Ron is friends with Harry, not because he is the famous Harry Potter but because he genuinely enjoys Harry’s company. Over the seven books, they go through hell together and for each other.
Frodo Baggins & Samwise Gamgee
Lord of the Rings is filled with bromances, but this one would be the biggest one of all. The movies depicted this relationship as almost homosexual (not that there is anything wrong with that). I think the book does a better job of depicting a bromance. The ending is true bromance.
Bingley & Darcy
These two did the whole bros before hoes before it was a thing. Bingley leaves Netherfield on the advice of Darcy, giving up on the chance of love. What says bromance more than that?
Merry & Pippin
Technically these two are related. But they have an amazing friendship, which normally leads them into a lot of trouble. These books depict true friendship and everything that goes with it.
Legolas & Gimli
This bromance is slight different to the others in LOTR. In the world of Tolkien elves and dwarves do not get along. They have a history of hating each other. However these two forge a great friendship (pun intended), despite the bias of their respective races.
Cable & Deadpool
These two have the most interesting friendship. Without giving too many spoilers, they have a love hate friendship that moves forwards and backwards but they always end as friends.
Warren & Ridge
I cannot elaborate too much on this without giving all the spoilers but this friendship is incredibly special. Ridge is deaf and Warren frequently signs for him with others that cannot. He plays a pivotal role in the romance between Ridge and Sydney.
Pudge & Colonol
If you haven’t read Looking for Alaska, you really need to. This friendship goes through hell and back. It is an incredibly moving tale of teenagers at a boarding school. As you can imagine that the horrible time of teenage-hood combined with the confines of a boarding school make for an interesting friendship.
Richard & Ohr
These two pirates travel the seas together, treasure hunting and looking for wenches to bed. When Richard fancies himself in love (twice over), Ohr helps him to see clearly. Actually Ohr helps him with everything. Ohr helps him escape plenty of difficult situations, all in the name of friendship.
What bromance stands out to you?
