“Are you afraid I’ll laugh at how awful you sound? I can’t HEAR YOU, SYDNEY!”

Sydney finds out that her boyfriend has been cheating on her with her best friend, leaving her homeless and heartbroken on her 22nd birthday. Ridge, her neighbour takes her in while they work on her newfound love of writing lyrics. But the process of writing lyrics together draws them closer and closer despite Ridge having a girlfriend of his own.

For the last year I have heard nothing but hype and praise about Colleen Hoover and for once the hype was right. I am so addicted already. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this book. I am now a devoted CoHo fan! In fact, I have already picked up November 9.

There is actually a soundtrack to accompany this book which has all of the songs written by Sydney and Ridge. It was the perfect way to amplify the experience of this novel. To be able to actually listen to the song as it is written right there was amazing and so much better than I could have imagined. If you have read this book but did not listen to the soundtrack with it, then you need to go back and reread while listening to the songs.

Hoover is an amazing author. I loved how she so seamlessly rotated between Sydney and Ridge’s point of view. She also needs a round of applause for the beautiful way she depicted Ridge’s deafness. I never thought of Ridge as disabled and Hoover never leaves me thinking as such. Ridge’s inability to hear does not affect his romance with Sydney and I love that.

Now onto the romance between Sydney and Ridge. It is an emotional affair (pun intended). Hoover writes this emotional rollercoaster fantastically. I just wanted Ridge to break up with Maggie off the bat but obviously the story wouldn’t be what it is if I got my wish. The struggle that Ridge went through is so realistic that you cannot help but feel sorry for him even though you know that you probably shouldn’t. Hoover balances out all the emotion with perfectly timed humor and wit though so you don’t feel completely drained.

There is also an epilogue from Maggie’s perspective on the same website as the soundtrack. It should be checked out as well because it just ties it all together.

My recommendation: grab your headphones and sit on the balcony while enjoying this read.
