This week’s session of Babes’n’Books was centered on poetry and rhymes. Poetry and rhymes help to teach children how to read. The repetition adds predictability while engaging a child and making the experience more enjoyable. Nursery rhymes are a perfect example of this.

We read a variety of nursery rhymes such as Little Miss Muffet and Pat A Cake. We also read some poems from the book Switching On the Moon by Jane Yolen. Switching On the Moon is perfect for a part of the bedtime routine. The poems are quite soothing and are generally focused on nighttime, sleep time and the moon.

This week’s feature author was Lynley Dodd, the author of the ever popular Hairy Maclary series. Her characters include Hairy Maclary, Slinky Malinki, Schnitzel Von Krumm and many more. We are lucky as our library has a large collection of these books available. We read two of her most popular books including the one that started it all.

What better choice than to read the first in the series. It introduces all of the main characters of Dodd’s books. The illustrations are timeless and adorable. I remember them reading this on Play School when I was a child! I believe this will be a treasured book in our house.
